Background

Alinta Energy’s power generation and energy infrastructure portfolio included a coal fired power station located at Port Augusta, called Northern Power Station.

The Company closed down this facility in May 2016. In anticipation of the closure, Alinta sought Thomson Bridge’s advice on how to formally recognise the skills, knowledge and experince possessed by many staff at the power station prior to plant shut down.

Our role

Our team designed a Recognition of Prior Learning framework under which Alinta nominated suitable candidates that could be awarded nationally recognised Qualifications in Power Station Operations. 

Working in conjunction with Alinta’s inhouse training team, we designed a framework that included a variety of techniques such as:

• Practical Assessments
• Employee Interviews
• Assessing all courses completed by the candidates, mapping against core and elective Unit of Competency requirements
• Gathering of relevant licenses and other evidence.

Theses steps were scheduled to accommodate work and time commitments for each candidate.

Where the requirements were met, Thomson Bridge issued Certificates III and IV in Power Station Operations.

Where the full Certificate requirements were not met, Thomson Bridge was able to:

• Award individual Units of Competency where relevant; and
• Provide assistance in developing and/or delivering gap training.
