Description

RelyOn Australia is accredited by the Global Wind Organisation to deliver GWO Advanced Rescue Training (ART). The ART program has been tailored based on industry best-practice and consists of Nationally Recognised training in the performance of rescue operations and vertical rescue techniques. This course is delivered by an experienced ESI professional, bringing a depth of knowledge and experience to the learner.

The GWO Advanced Rescue Training (ART) has been tailored based on industry best-practice and consists of rescue operations from a wind turbine using industry standard rescue equipment, rescue methods and techniques.

The Course ensures that participants can implement and lead an advanced rescue operation and adhere to safety practices at work.

Our GWO ART program is delivered in accordance with the following GWO ART Standard modules:

  • Hub Rescue, Spinner & Inside Blade Rescue
  • Nacelle, Tower & Basement Rescue
  • Single Rescuer: Hub, Spinner & Inside Blade Rescue
  • Single Rescuer: Nacelle, Tower & Basement Rescue

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive:

  • GWO certification for Advanced Rescue Training. Results will be recorded on the international GWO database.
  • Two national accredited Units of Competency (listed below).

Course aim

This program is a specialised course with a focus on use and application of specific tools to approach complicated rescue situations in wind turbines. Participants will demonstrate appropriate casualty handling while accessing and rescuing the casualty from various locations in the turbine.

Target learner group

Wind turbines are often located in remote areas and distant from established medical facilities. The time from placing the emergency/distress call until the professional emergency responders arrive at the location is also increasing.

The target group for this course are wind turbine personnel teams who require a high level of self-reliance in emergency situations.

Learning activities

GWO Advanced Rescue Training supports the employer by mitigating numerous common wind turbine emergency rescue related hazards, included but not limited to:

  • Injured person getting stuck due to structure interference
  • Use of improper anchor point for injured person transportation
  • Ropes, slings and similar breaking due to sharp edges
  • Improper rescue method and technique
  • Physical shock, mental stress, exhaustion, fatigue due time-consuming rescue
  • Challenging weather conditions for rescue: wind speed, extreme temperatures and alike
  • Due to limited space difficulties to put harness and other rescue equipment onto an injured person and prepare the injured person for safe transportation
  • Collision of injured person and vessel when delivering the injured person down to the vessel, due to vessel moving up and down
  • Burns from contact HV-cables or hyperthermia during rescue operation
  • Improper PPE of rescuer and/or placing improper PPE onto injured person
  • Improper means of communication during rescue operation
  • Improper positioning of turbine parts
  • Movable parts of the wind turbine not locked properly etc.

GWO recommends that decisions concerning the ratio of AR trained personnel is based on the employer’s risk assessment and work specific characteristics. The basic elements to consider when determining the ratio of AR trained personnel are:

  • The activities being undertaken (risk & complexity)
  • Organizational limitations to ensure that the required AR trained personnel are available. Such as variations in the team’s composition and size.
  • The reasonably expected support of professional emergency responders, including availability of personnel trained for heights and their reasonable expected response time. The guiding principle when determining the required amount of trained staff, is that the emergency response time of a trained Emergency responder should be as small as is reasonable possible. In other words, if training additional employees in advanced rescue provides a significant reduction in response time, then GWO advices to train those additional employees. To implement GWO ART, the employer will need to have the following:
    • An integrated emergency response plan
    • Sufficiently trained personnel
    • Dedicated advanced rescue equipment
    • Training Facility (Onsite delivery can be facilitated as required)

Learning outcomes

In accordance with the GWO standards, participants will gain knowledge of:

  • Legislative requirements and Duty of Care responsibilities
  • Hazards & Risks associated with specific WTGs
  • Emergency Planning requirements
    • Casualty management
    • Incident response and reporting
  • Advanced Rescue equipment including:
    • Rescue Stretchers
    • Haul kit/s & equipment to gain mechanical advantage

And demonstrate skills in:

  • Managing an incident scene
  • Correct use of rescue devices in active and passive setups
  • Safe stretcher rigging and handling throughout WTG
  • Removing a casualty to a place of safety.
  • WTG Rescue procedures: - Hub/Spinner
    • Roof
    • Inside the nacelle
    • Yaw deck
    • Tower
    • Basement

Learners are required to have the following to participate in this course:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (e.g. Hard Hat, Safety Footwear, Approved Hi-Vis Clothing, Safety Glasses)

Assessment approach

Learners will be assessed using a combination of the following methods:

  • Theory/Written Assessment (e.g. Short Answer Questions, Multiple Choice, Verbal Questioning Interview)
  • Direct Observation/Practical Assessment (e.g. Workplace, Simulated Environment, Role Play/Scenario)

Course Entry Requirements

To participate in this course, learners are required to hold a current certification in GWO Basic Safety Training. For leaners who do not have this pre-requisite, please see our GWO Basic Safety Training Course.

ART Modules may potentially be physically demanding. A medical declaration is required prior to undertaking the course, to ensure students are physically capable to performing the physical tasks, in particular the practical activities associated with working at heights.
