MSMBLIC001 - Licence to operate a standard boiler, MSMBLIC002 - Licence to operate an advanced boiler & UEPOPL004 - Licence to operate a steam turbine

Description

This course is designed to train individuals who are required to hold a current certificate for the specified work. This course has been tailored based on industry best-practice and to be in accordance with the relevant standards and legislations. The course will be delivered by an experienced industry professional, bringing a depth of knowledge and experience to the learner.

This course is designed to ensure that participants have the skills and knowledge required to operate an advanced boiler, including a standard boiler. Operation includes boiler start up, handover, monitoring, shut down and storage. Also covered are preparation for inspection procedures as specified in manufacturer recommendations, identification of maintenance requirements and relevant risk control measures.

The boilers covered by this course are standard boilers, including boilers defined in AS 2593:2004 Safety management and supervision systems and AS 3873:2001 Pressure equipment, Operation and maintenance and typically have fixed and modulating combustion controls, fixed and modulated air supply, and heat source.

Combined with this course, is the skills and knowledge required to operate a steam turbine for licensing purposes, and covers the operation of any steam turbine (except a steam turbine that produces a power output of less than 500 kW). This course requires the operator to plan the work, carry out pre-operational safety checks, start the steam turbine, monitor steam turbine operation, and shut-down the steam turbine.

This course is based upon the National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work.

Course aim

The course aims to give the learners an overall understanding of the operation of a standard and an advanced boiler unit and the relationships between the various systems within the unit cycle.

This course also aims to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required to operate a steam turbine. The course will describe pre-operational safety checks, and how to start, monitor and shut down the steam turbine.

Target learner group

This unit of competency supports persons who are required to operate a standard boiler, an advanced boiler and a steam turbine.

Learning activities

Delivery includes:

  • Trainer led classroom presentations
  • Theory assessment
  • Site Visit

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, a learner will have developed an understanding of the following:

  • Plan the work, carry out pre-operational safety checks, and start of a standard boiler, an advanced boiler and a steam turbine;
  • Accurate recording and maintenance of information relating to operation of a standard boiler, an advanced boiler and a steam turbine;
