Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process within Australia's Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector that evaluates and recognises the skills, knowledge, and experience a person has acquired through previous formal education, work experience, life experience, or a combination of these.
RPL allows learners to gain formal credit towards qualifications based on skills and knowledge they already have.
This means learners don't need to repeat training in areas where they're already competent.
This results in:
- Reducing unnecessary training time and costs
- Get formal recognition for skills you've picked up on the job
- Creating more accessible pathways to nationally recognised qualifications
- Supporting workforce mobility and career transitions
The process typically involves gathering evidence of prior learning, mapping this against relevant units of competency from Training Packages, and having this evidence assessed by a qualified assessor against the requirements of the qualification.
If gaps are identified in the skills and knowledge required for a unit, learners may need to do some extra training to fill these gaps.
RPL is a key component of Australia's competency-based training system and is regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA)
